Hampshire County age grade update for 15/16 age groups for 2020-21

County representative rugby is changing

There are some changes to county rugby for U15 and U16 age groups for the 2020/21 season that are aimed to simplify the player development pathway and crucially, to try and reduce the risk of players over training and over playing.

In the past county rugby has had its own representative pathway running alongside the RFU sanctioned Developing Player Programme (DPP), which is provided locally by London Irish. Players could be in the DPP or the county programme or both, all in addition to club and school rugby. There have been many resulting examples of boys playing and training 7 days a week and the risk of over training, combined with specialism at too young an age, can all result increase the risk of burnout and players leaving the game, long before such young players are fully developed both emotionally and physically.

The various player pathways to elite rugby has long been confused, being in the DPP is not the same as being in the academy, playing for county or a top rugby playing school, is not a guarantee of being part of the DPP etc. For the needs and interests of the players, things had to change.

A wide ranging consultation has taken place over the last year or so and this is now at a stage of implementation. One key objective has been to maintain playing and development opportunities for as wide a group of talented players as possible.

Playing Opportunities (beyond club/school rugby)

London Irish are the DPP provider for Hampshire, Berkshire and Middlesex, and from the 2020/21 season, representative or “County” teams at U15 and U16 will only be selected from players within the London Irish DPP programme. Those players will then represent their county at inter DPP match days where “Hampshire London Irish” will play Equivalent Berkshire and Middlesex London Irish sides. Further games will also be arranged at Festivals between DPP squads from other Academies, with a London Irish DPP side (made up of the 3x feeder counties), facing Harlequins DPP for example.

Hampshire will still be running County youth squads at U17,U18 and U20 and details on trials for these squads will be announced on the respective age group pages on the Hampshire website.

Trials and assessments

As from the 2020/21 season Hampshire will no longer have a standalone nomination/trial process for U15’s or U16’s squads. Instead of “County” trials, London Irish will hold trials to select players to take part in the weekly DPP programme they deliver at various centres across the three feeder counties.

In Hampshire the DPP centre will be at Applemore College and players will be invited to attend DPP trials through various means including direct nominations from schools/clubs and by recommendations from the London Irish scouting network. Details on the DPP trials for different age groups will be published on the Hampshire website.

Only players selected to be part of the London Irish U15 and U16 DPP programme for the 2020/21 season will be given the opportunity to represent “Hampshire-London Irish”, in fixtures against the other DPP/County groups from Berkshire and Middlesex.

Transition to Academy or County U17 and U18

The London Irish DPP pathway runs for U15 and U16 age groups. Those players who unfortunately do not make subsequent selection for the London Irish Academy at U17, will then be eligible to represent Hampshire squads at U17, U18 and U20, where they will be in competition for squad selection along with other (perhaps later developing), players who were not part of the DPP pathway at U15/16. This all means many more players will have a further opportunity to play at a high level.

What does this mean for Hampshire U15 and U16 players?

Any Hampshire qualified player will be able to trial for a place in the London Irish DPP programme for 2020/21. Details on the nomination/invitation process will be published on the Hampshire RFU website when arrangements have been confirmed. All of this is of course subject to change depending on COVID-19 outcomes and how the RFU timetable to restart the community game.

If successful at the trials, players will then be part of the London Irish U15 or U16 DPP for 2020/21 and be given the opportunity to attend the weekly DPP sessions and also to play in the Hampshire/London Irish fixtures later in the season.

Hampshire will maintain strong links with London Irish in order to manage the “Hampshire/London Irish” DPP squads for fixtures, to help identify potentially talented players suitable for the DPP and to also manage the transition out of DPP into Hampshire squads at U17 and beyond. Mike Greenslade will be acting as liaison manager for the Hampshire/London Irish DPP “County” squads at both U15 and U16 age groups for the 2020/21 season.
