First Aid Procedures

Not every injury can be prevented especially in a contact sport such as rugby, so it is essential that in the event of an injury, adequate first aid procedures/ first aiders are in place.

The safety of all players is of paramount importance and your club should ensure that, whenever a game or training occurs appropriate first aid cover and equipment will be provided.

There should always be access to a telephone in a clubhouse so emergency assistance can be summoned immediately.

Every club must have a First Aid and Emergencies Policy which outlines what to do in the event of injuries/accidents, who the first aider for each age group/event is, instructions if the club has a defibrillator, plus CLEAR concussion guidance (available from the RFU website).

There should also be clear procedures for return to play after injury which ALL coaches and coaching assistants should be aware of.

All injuries should be recorded by the age group first aider and serious injuries requiring medical attention/follow-up must be reported to the Club Safeguarding officer.
