In a thriller of a game which saw Hampshire Ladies valiantly lose 20-31 to Devon Ladies at Newton Abbot RFC on Sunday 15th May writes Garry Doherty.

Both sets of Ladies played their hearts out and can be proud of the result and the spirit in which they played the game.

But what was most interesting about this game was not what happened on the field.

The spectators included both Hampshire and Devon Presidents and their respective Honorary Secretaries.

“England are World champions and sometimes we forget that” said Hampshire President Ian Kerr. “Ladies Rugby is here to stay. We watched a very exciting game today played by exceptional players”.

“Sometimes the Ladies game does not get the coverage it deserves” announced Devon President, Maureen Jackson “and that’s why Ian and I are here today. We have an opportunity to start addressing the balance.

Growth in the Women’s game continues to be phenomenal”, added Maureen.

But it wasn’t just the presence of high level Devon and Hampshire officials which was important. On the pitch Devon Referees had provided top notch and experienced personnel and that really showed as the game progressed.

“This game should be held high as an example of how Rugby should be played. It was a delight to watch”, expressed Ian.
