Ex-Hampshire and Gosport & Fareham Colt Joe Batley has had to withdraw from the England Under 20s squad who are defending their world title in Northern Italy now writes Brian Seeney.

Batley contracted glandular fever and the Gloucester Rugby man has been forced to withdraw just like his Hampshire team-mate Joe Marchant (ex-Winchester RFC) who sustained an injury playing for Harlequins at Newcastle in the Premiership.

Joe's dad Rob said: "Despite great efforts to get him back to full fitness it was decided that it was too much of a risk for Joe to include him in this year's tournament.

"He hadn't recovered sufficiently to be able to perform at the level this tournament would demand."
