Congratulations to Oasis School selected by the Area 2 team for the England v Scotland curtain raiser held on Saturday 14th March.

This was a terrific opportunity for the children, teaching staff and the school. Also excellent recognition for all their hard work in the All Schools programme by them and Sharon Evans their Community Rugby Coach.

Oasis school is an inner-city school based in Southampton and its sport provision was very football dominated with most of the children having never experienced rugby.

Two years ago there was no provision for rugby on the curriculum and in Yr1 Sharon provided curriculum lessons to every Y7 and Y8 child as well as some taster sessions to Y9.

The after school club was established and was regularly attended by 10 -15 children. The staff were key to getting this going and attended and encouraged the children at every point, despite being football players themselves.

In Yr2 Sharon continued with offering curriculum rugby to every child in Y7 and Y8 and taster sessions to Y9 and Y10 as well as the after school club.

During the summer term Sharon set up a leadership program for Y9 and Y10 children.

Eighteen students attended a leadership course delivered by Sharon and staff.

The school staff then organised for Y6 children from the local primary feeder schools to come to Oasis and receive coaching and games from the leadership students.

The program ran for six weeks with a different primary school attending each week and the students designing and delivering the sessions, guided and reviewed by PE staff and Sharon.

Oasis School is now a Yr3 All School and has rugby on the curriculum for every school year as well as a weekly after school club and a fantastic rugby leadership template in place.

The success of this program is due to the dedication and hard work of the staff and All Schools Coach and has given the children in a very football dominated area a chance to try something new!

Jonathon Cook, teacher, says it was a wonderful day and an amazing experience.

As usual the RFU looked after us all in a superb way and the 'Rugby Boys' were delighted with it all.

We feel very privileged to have had that experience and rugby in our school continues to go from strength to strength; this experience will help to feed into this even more.
