It is with great sadness that Hampshire Rugby Football Union has learned of the death of Andy Vears, who spent the majority of his playing and coaching career at United Services (Portsmouth) RFC, but had more recently been player-coach at newly formed Market House Pirates RFC.

Our thoughts are with Andy's family and friends at this sad time.

A source at United Services Rugby Club said the following, "Andy was a true Rugby man, playing and coaching at US Portsmouth at all levels for many years.

"He was part of the furniture and he was always happy to help out and coach at other local clubs.

"And in the last few years set up Market House Pirates RFC."

The funeral will be at Portchester Crematorium at 14:00 on Thursday 6th February.

His son, Nick, has asked that club ties etc are worn by his rugby friends.

Drinks will be held at the Market House Tavern afterwards.
